Are you a donut fun? If so, try the next recipe that lets you prepare traditional Portuguese Sonhos or Dreams (in Portuguese, sonhos mean dreams). Comparing to regular donuts, sonhos are smaller and usually rolled in sugar, rather than just sprinkled with it. Portuguese Dreams can be served solo or with a syrup. If you choose to serve them in sauce, start with preparing it.

Sonhos are a one bite sweets that would do their job on parties or just like a quick snack. Ready for preparing sonhos? Let’s go! As usually with Portuguese dessert recipes, be sure you have plenty of eggs.

What you need:

Ingredients:

For Sonhos:

  • 300 g flour
  • 6 eggs
  • 80 g butter or margarine
  • pinch of salt
  • 500 ml water
  • 2 tbsp sugar
  • peel from 1 orange
  • cinnamon and sugar for sprinkling

For the syrup:

  • 200 g sugar
  • 1 lemon or orange zest
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 150 ml water

Directions:

Phase 1: (preparing syrup)

  1. take a saucepan and pour water into it
  2. add sugar, cinnamon stick and lemon or orange zest
  3. bring to boil
  4. keep boiling for 10 minutes
  5. remove from the fire and cool

Phase 2: (dough for Sonhos)

  1. take another pot and pour water into it
  2. add salt, butter/margarine, sugar and orange zest
  3. bring to boil
  4. remove lemon peel
  5. but still keep on fire
  6. add flour and mix it well, till you get a soft and homogenous dough/mixture
  7. remove from fire
  8. take a bowl and pour the mixture into it
  9. let it cool for a while
  10. start adding eggs one by one, keep on stirring

Phase 3: (frying and garnishing)

  1. take a skillet pan and pour oil on it
  2. heat the oil well
  3. take a tablespoon and using it, start adding spoons of the dough to the oil
  4. let these sonhos fry for a while on a middle fire till they triple their size and the crust is crunchy and golden
  5. remove one by one from the skillet
  6. drain on a paper towel
  7. sprinkle with sugar and cinnamon (or roll them in sugar in cinnamon)
  8. now it is time to top your sonhos with the prepared sauce and enjoy it!
