Croatia created its own way of serving pizzas. Local ingredients and favorite ones dominate that kind of pizzas. Eggs, sour cream, salami, local beef meat sausage – kulen and leeks are only some of them that are worth mentioning. Mild or spicy, colorful or dimmed in colors, all depends what and where you order it. Are you curious? Read more about it below!
Do you love burgers? If so, you must try their alternative. Ćevapčići and Pljeskavica, that is what is so popular in Croatia. And once tried, you will not have doubts why. We already wrote about Ćevapčići, so now, it is turn for Pljeskavica.
Do you need to grab something quickly for a lunch? Do you want to enjoy the local atmosphere? Or maybe you participate in a local festival or would like to get some food from a food-truck? If the answer to at least one of these questions is ‘yes’, then Ćevapčići is for you!
Croatia is full of sun, good weather and a relatively mild winter. The coastal part with campsites and beaches is the most popular region. Tropical trees grow from Zadar till Dubrovnik. Palm trees, colorful bushes, fruit trees, exotic flowers, and a lot of smaller plants from warm zones can be found there. That is why, the selection of available fruits and vegetables is different from the central part of Europe.
Sooner or later a deep need of eating something sweet comes to everybody. Doesn’t matter whether you regularly avoid it or not, sweets in some form would be needed to guarantee a good day. Sometimes, you want them to improve your mood. Sometimes because you need a quick energy. And sometimes, it is just because you want it.
The first thing that hit us, was the fact that there was not as many burger bars as in other European countries. That suggested us, that probably, that kind of a food was not the most favorite one. And that is true. Croatia has its own substitutes, that I must admit, do not stay behind burgers.
Seafood is a must try in Croatia. Fresh, full of flavor and so well prepared. We have already tried mussels served in two different ways - Mussels in a tomato sauce - Dagnje na Buzaru - Mussels alla buzara (red) and Mussels in breadcrumps - Mussels alla buzara (white). Now, it was time for squids.
All lovers of the Italian cuisine will feel as in Heaven while being on holidays in Croatia. Plentiful of pizzerias, Italian restaurants and cafeterias will surely satisfy you. Pasta, calzone, pizza, gnocchi, whatever you want. Add to that a small aromatic espresso, and you would feel as in Italy.
Mussels – once tried, loved forever. Dagnje na Buzaru – local, fresh and aromatic! Garlic, olive oil, some herbs and wine. All that makes that mussels were among the most loved meals. We have already tried the ‘red’ version of them a couple of times, so now it was time for a white one.
Buzara-style mussels are, generally speaking, mussels cooked in a wonderful sauce made of olive oil, wine and garlic. In most recipes you will also find parsley that gives a characteristic taste but composes very well with garlic and wine.
Croatia - a beautiful European country full of historic sights, wonderful cuisine and beautiful landscapes. A great choice of top end wines, fresh seafood and a live atmosphere will push you to repeat your stay in this Adriatic country.
